Osaka

“Make things round so you will not offend others.” A typical dish for the New Year.

Shiromiso zouni

A traditional dish of zouni in Osaka. This is a shiro (white) miso soup with round mochi and daikon, carrots and satoimo which are nicely sliced into the same shape. This dish is usually served in the New Year, and you can buy zouni daikon and kintokki carrots, which are made especially for the zoni at super markets before the New Year. The ingredients are all cut and sliced into the same shape to “make things round so you will not offend others.” This traditional dish is not only cooked for the New Year, but also learned as a traditional food of Osaka through educational activities at school.
