Sweets of Matsuyama to celebrate doll’s festival
Soy Sauce Mochi
Soy sauce mochi is a kind of cake from Matsuyama, made of 上新粉(high-quality rice flour made from non-glutinous rice), sugar and soy sauce. Tradition says that it originates in the beginning of Edo period, when Sadakatsu Hisamatsu, founder of Matsuyama Domain, made soy sauce 餅 for doll’s festival and gave them to his retainers to wish for their prosperity. Later it became popular for doll’s festivals in ordinary households, and it has been passed on as ‘Mom’s cooking’. Nowadays they are sold in souvenir shops and some have 餡(bean jam) inside.
