Taste plums pickled with the perfect balance of sourness and saltiness in Atami, a city long associated with plums.
Atami Umeboshi
Atami Plum Garden opened in 1886, and one can see 457 trees of 60 different species in bloom, some of them over 100 years old. The Plum Festival is held every year from January through March, with many tourists coming to see the different plum trees blossoming, some early, and some later. Pickled plums made from plums grown in the Plum Garden, or others grown in Atami have become well known, and are popular souvenirs. It appears that the climate of Atami produces plums with a mild sourness and tasty flesh.
