Food culture born amid post-war reconstruction
Gyu-tan Yaki
Gyu-tan Yaki, grilled beef tongue, is said to have appeared in a menu created by a Yakitori restaurant owner after the second world war. Those were the times when people suffered from food shortage, and that led to the custom of eating every edible part of animals in very creative ways. Today, Gyu-tan has grown to become one of the best-known specialty food of Sendai, served in a number of restaurants in the city.
