Miyazaki
A special feature of autumn to enjoy ayu grown in a clear stream of Gokasegawa river.
Ayu ryori (cuisine)
The special scenery of Nobeoka City in Miyazaki Prefecture in autumn is large traps called "ayu yana" placed over Gokasegawa river for catching ayu which are built with logs and stones. Young ayu swim up to the head stream of Gokasegawa river in spring, and grow fatty in summer by eating diatom in the clear stream. Then in autumn ayu come back to the midstream and downstream for spawning. Ayu yana is then used for catching ayu. The season for ayu in Nobeoka is from October to November, and you can enjoy various dishes of ayu such as shioyaki, misoyaki, segoshi and ayumeshi around that time.
